We boarded the train from many stations. About 12 of us
boarded in the San Fernando Valley, two at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, and
what looked like a hundred more boarded in Fullerton, including Exalted Queen Mother, Sue Ellen
Cooper, as well as the crew from the Today Show, who were taping us all day for airing sometime later in June or early
July. We arrived in SJC about 10 AM and converged on the town. It looked like hundreds of red hatters were at the train station to meet us, many from the San Diego area.
We walked a few blocks (some
of us were singing) to the El Adobe Restaurant, where we held a meeting in their huge back room.
We bought products such as purple T-shirts with the poem “Warning” on the front
("When I’m an old woman I shall wear purple, and a red hat that doesn’t go and doesn’t suit
me…..") and red license plate frames that said "Official Member – Red Hat
Society".
An
added delight was having celebrity Florence Henderson join
in the festivities. (See photos # 3 & 4 in bottom row below.)
